Position: Senior Project Engineer
Rate: £465 Inside IR35
Location: Birmingham
Working Arrangements: Hybrid 3 days office, 2 days home
 
People Group is recruiting a Project Engineer from a Network Rail background to work for a Leading Rail Consultancy.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the customer/client in developing the selected single option.
  • Carry out independent checking of safety-critical design documentation.
  • Carry out engineering verifications.
  • Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines.
  • Act as or liaise with the appropriate Project Engineer so that method statements for site works and surveys, in particular, are approved to the required standards.
  • Assure whether contractors’ design, construction, and specialist personnel are competent. (CEM/CRE appointment etc.)
  • Undertake reviews of design and construction activities, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Lead the discipline engineering consultation between the project team, client/customer, designer/contractor, and the applicable Route Engineers (Discipline) throughout the design development stages and construction.
  • Review and provide comments on initial design proposals at initial meetings with the customer/client.

To be successful in this position, we’re looking for someone who has:
  • Must have experience working on an Asset Protection project as a Project Engineer for Network Rail
  • Understanding of NR/L2/INI/CP009 and other Network Rail handover requirements for major projects.
  • Ability to review and interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Welder Qualification Records, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) reports (e.g., ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant).
  • Competence in reliability-based design and assessment, including probabilistic analysis and risk-based maintenance planning.
  • Ability to evaluate failure modes, deterioration mechanisms (corrosion, fatigue, creep), and apply whole-life cost principles.
  • Ability to compile and review handover packs, including as-built drawings, material certificates, weld maps, inspection records, and compliance statements.
  • ????Knowledge of root cause analysis for defects and implementing corrective actions in compliance with Network Rail’s assurance processes.
  • Familiarity with Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and quality documentation for heavy structures.
