Job description

A long term contract opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Construction Manager to join a tier-one consultancy providing project management, engineering, and construction management services to Network Rail.

Based in Derby, you will support construction assurance and governance for third-party works, ensuring the safety and integrity of Network Rail’s infrastructure.

You will cover the western region of the route, working between Derby and Bedford, and across to Peterborough. In a typical week, you will likely spend one to two days in the Derby office, with the remainder of your time spent visiting sites across the route.

The role offers £300 per day (Inside IR35), plus business mileage at 45p per mile. The initial contract duration is six months, with a strong likelihood of extension thereafter, making this an excellent opportunity to secure a long-term role within a relatively compact geographic area.

Your responsibilities:
  • Support construction assurance activities by monitoring site works for compliance with standards, plans, and safety requirements.
  • Assist with constructability reviews, audits, and interdisciplinary design checks, including validation of design risk assessments.
  • Review and support approval of Construction Phase Plans, Work Package Plans, and site-specific risk assessments.
  • Support the management of NRSWA projects and coordinate with site teams and third parties to ensure effective collaboration.
  • Collate and submit documentation for review and acceptance, maintaining accurate site diaries and contributing to assurance reports.
  • Track and report discrepancies between planned and completed work, supporting the close-out of non-conformances and reporting engineering issues.
  • Assist with the AMP/EIS process for asset data exchange and maintenance.
  • Identify and report quality or performance issues, contributing to lessons learned and best practice sharing.
  • Provide administrative and functional support to the Asset Protection team, including input into Construction Assurance Risk Management and attendance at planning meetings.

To be successful in the role, you will need to:
  • Have demonstrable experience in working on Network Rail (Civil Engineering) projects for either a Principal Contractor or the Client
  • Have a good understanding of Network Rail standards and assurance principles
  • Be able to interpret technical documentation
  • Be a good communicator
  • Be familiar with current Health and Safety legislation and procedures
