Job description

We are recruiting a Shift Engineer for a tunnelling project in the South East. This is a secured project, fully funded, with a signed construction contract. There will be some unique technical exposure - they are utilising a method to construct two shafts that has only been seen in the UK once before. 


As the Shift Engineer, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely operation of the TBM during the shift. You will monitor and record the TBM's performance, diagnose and resolve issues, and ensure the work is carried out according to safety standards and quality specifications. 


What you'll be doing?
  • Ensure a safe working environment, complying with all safety standards and regulations.
  • Prepare key project documents including RAMS, Material Conformance Reports, and Visual Task Sheets, with a focus on high-risk activities.
  • Deliver and support safety briefings (e.g., Start of Shift, Safety Alerts, VTS) in coordination with Supervisors and the Shift Manager.
  • Support Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) creation and complete QA documentation/check sheets accurately and on time.
  • Monitor Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations, maintain detailed shift records, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Participate in Safety, Quality, and Wellbeing inspections, reporting observations and concerns.
  • Assist in improving operational efficiency, leveraging knowledge of shaft sinking and TBM mechanics.
  • Contribute to weekly material reconciliations, supporting tracking of stock, usage, and reporting.
  • Help manage and track subcontractor performance, productivity, resource usage, and any project delays.
  • Support site setup for TBM/VSM launch, including planning, surveying, and setting out.


What you need
  • An HNC, HND or Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience working as shift engineer in tunnelling environment
  • Valid CSCS card (Black/Gold/White) and SMSTS 
  • It would be great if you have confined space, TSTS, TEEP and First Aid at Work


The position is offering a salary of between 60,000 - 65,000 per annum and a 4,500 car / travel allowance. There will be a % shift uplift (TBC). You'll also get a 5% employer contribution, private medical insurance and 25 days holiday.
